Throughout nearly half a century of establishment and development, Construction Joint Stock Company 47 (CC47) has consistently maintained its pioneering role in the construction of hydropower plants, irrigation works, and large-scale technical infrastructure projects. One of the most significant milestones in the company’s history came in 2016, when CC47 became the only domestic contractor in Vietnam capable of independently owning equipment and operating tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology — the most advanced of its kind at that time.
2016 – A Pivotal Year: From Technological Strength to the Title of “Tunnel King”
At a time when Vietnam’s construction industry still relied heavily on foreign contractors for underground works, Construction Joint Stock Company 47’s investment in and mastery of TBM tunneling technology marked a remarkable leap forward. This milestone not only demonstrated its stature and innovative spirit but also opened the door to fair competition with international contractors right on home ground.
With outstanding capability and a well-trained technical team, the company quickly established its brand in the construction of hydropower and irrigation tunnels. For this reason, many investors affectionately bestowed upon it the title of “Tunnel King” — a well-deserved recognition of its relentless efforts and impressive real-world achievements.
Technological Landmark: TBM 390E – A Symbol of Breakthrough
Building on this momentum of success, on March 31, 2017, at the construction site of the Da Nhim Hydropower Plant Expansion Project (Phase 2), Construction Joint Stock Company 47 officially put into operation the TBM 390E tunnel boring machine — one of the most advanced tunneling devices in the world at the time. This was the first time a Vietnamese enterprise owned and directly operated a high-tech TBM, rather than relying on foreign main contractors.
The TBM 390E measures over 150 meters in length, weighs 1,500 tons, and is equipped with 37 ultra-hard cutter heads capable of penetrating solid rock without the need for blasting. This equipment not only shortened construction timelines and ensured safety but also minimized environmental impact. It was a landmark achievement, marking the remarkable maturity of Vietnam’s underground construction industry — with Construction Joint Stock Company 47 leading the way.
